Frode Winther played the role of Thor in Robert Wilson's Edda at The Norwegian Theatre in 2017. The Hedda Award 2017 in the special artistic achievement category was given to the complete ensemble of actors in the production.
Winter won The Hedda Award 2020 in the best supporting actor category for the role of the investigator in Raskolnikov, The Norwegian Theatre and Det Vestnorske Teateret (2019).

The Hedda Jury gave the following reason for the award to the Edda ensemble:
"Certain assignments demand a more dedicated approach than others. Intense concentration. Detail-oriented precision. Finely tuned musicality. This year's award in the special artistic achievement category goes to an ensemble of actors who met and who mastered such an assignment with force and conviction. Some of them had experience with the same director and the same expression from former work. Some entered the work with openness and a will to learn. Together they succeeded in creating one of this year's most grandiose and most coherently stylistic performing arts experiences."
The Hedda Jury gave the following reason for the award to Frode Winther in 2020:
"The characters of the nominated in the best supporting actor category are all performers within masculine, suffocating parameters. Even if comedy simmers beneath the surface, they all, each in his way, contribute very much to the mysterious fear the different performances are characterised by. The one who impressed The Hedda Jury the most in this regard shows, like the rest of the ensemble, an intense presence in which every twitch at the side of his mouth becomes significant. He may seem to flatter, but the audience soon realises that he is also fatally dangerous. As a sadistic cat's play with the mouse, he drags out the main person's suffering.
This year's winner creates an involving, comical and deeply human character, in a role calling for shivers after having witnessed it."
Frode Winther is married to actress Ellen Birgitte Winther.
