Morten Traavik is educated at GITIS in Moscow, Russia, Nordic Theatre School in Aarhus, Denmark and Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts (SADA) in Stockholm, Sweden.

From 1999 he has instructed and performed in Austria, China, Denmark, Lithuania, Norway, Russia, Slovenia and USA. He was among the founders of plus an instructor and performer in Krement X, participating in the productions Quartet, GYM, N.N. and one night stand, among others. He has been and actor at Sogn and Fjordane Theatre and at Lab Roki in Reykjavik, Iceland.

"Up until 2010 Morten Traavik has found the time to become one of Norway's most talked-about artists. His expansive projects Miss Landmine Cambodia (2009) and Miss Landmine Angola (2008) include portraits of mine-damaged women in model poses wearing Miss landmine sashes across their chests, not unlike what one sees in ordinary Miss such-and-so competitions. The project also includes competitions Miss Landmine, and there is a manifesto, Miss Landmine Manifesto, connected to the project. The project has been referred to in the media a number of times, in connection with the project itself, but also in connection with ethical reflection concerning content and aim.

In 2010 Morten Traavik was engaged as residing artist by The Defence Museum."

With Un-Magritt Nordseth and Anne Mali Sæther Morten Traavik directed the production Henrik Ibsen - En dannelsesreise i Telemark* (Henrik Ibsen - An Education Journey in Telemark) for Ibsen Theatre in 2006. The production was nominated for The Hedda Award 2006 in the theatre project of the year category.

During Bergen International Festival 2014 he directed Cardamomyang, a single performance in which texts and melodies by Thorbjørn Egner, plus traditional songs from North Korea, were performed by North Korean children. The performance became very controversial.
