The Continents Move at Night

The Continents Move at Night is a project in collaboration between Vebjørg Hagene Thoe, Stina Ekblad and Tuomo Haapala, bringing an orchestra.

The Continents Move at Night is a room installation with tapestries and objects inspired by the musical piece Kontinenterna rör seg i natten by Tuomo Haapala. The work uses sound, music, movement and dance with the visual images to experience a new scenic expression. The project aims to experiment with a unique scenic expression across professional borders, based on a specific composition and planned two and three dimensional tapestries.

The Continents Move at Night consists of eight textile art works, placed as an installation in the room. The tapestries were originally planned to connect music, text, movement and visual expressions, and each tapestry is based on a particular musical sequence.

The topic of The Continents Move at Night is racism, and also the conflict between North and South. The continents practically move to switch places, in hope for a more just world. The music was written for the poem called Mau-Mau by Arto Melleri, which is about Kenya of the 1960es, when the Mau Mau movement was still strong in East Africa.
