"Monica Isakstuen is a symptom of the new, Scandinavian stage expression, which has eventually moved far from Henrik Ibsen. This autumn, director Øyvind Osmo Eriksen confronts her newest play, which has its Norwegian premiere at Intimscenen.
Look at me when I'm talking to you is about liberation, but also about the drive of being wanted by one's child. And about the fear of being desired by a parent. At the same time, the play examines the relationship between woman and man and victim and abuser.
We meet a mother and a son and a father and a daughter. They are without age, and they are placed in an unknown place. The boy, called 'my son', represents the child's potential as an adult. He becomes a masturbator, a hunter, a failed seducer. In other words, he becomes a man, in Isakstuen's determinist gender universe. The father and daughter are met in a kind of waiting room for death. The theme there is the limits between biology and desire, being a father and being a daughter.
The characters are not independent individuals, they are representatives for us all. No secrets are revealed and no action is being followed. But we witness how the characters take part in each others' streams of consciousness. How hard can it really be to be a good parent? Can one manage the development of another human being at all? And what kind of power structures do we unconsciously reproduce in our children?"
