"Chock-full of wisdom from life lived, and with not insignificant experience (Bergman was divorced four times), Ingmar Bergman confronted the relationship between husband and wife in 1973, in Scenes from a Marriage. The TV series became an unexpected success when people all over the world, married and unmarried, recognised themselves in the situation of the married couple Marianne and Johan.
This spring, director Kjersti Horn brings this legendary TV series to the stage. Nina Ellen Ødegård and Anders Dale play the roles Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson interpreted in the TV version. Alone onstage, in close interaction, the two actors bring us along, as the seemingly happy marriage between Marianne and Johan is dissolved.
Marriage problems is the basis of many stories. In Scenes from a Marriage, Ingmar Bergman goes to the core of it. With an arsonist's eagerness he throws in abortion, infidelity, lies, alcohol, fighting - so that it burns hot and well with all imaginable human weaknesses at the bottom of it: Jealousy, inferiority complexes, egotism, bitterness, pretentiousness and so on. In short: Everything that excites us in life.
The story is at least as strong today as it was 45 years ago, perhaps particularly because marriage has, in public discussion, regained some of its lost shimmer. It might be a bit clichéd to say that the contemporary spirit has regained its faith in love, but in Arne Lygre's version of this play, it is at least brutally in contact with reality."
