"In a crumbling mansion north of New York a mother and a daughter live as if the surrounding world has stopped existing. In here existential claustrophobia rules, and the two of them exist within a symbiosis of hatred and love, biting sarcasm, sudden vulnerability - and pitch-black humour. As in Beckett, they wait, but for what?
Earlier, the mother Big Edie and her daughter Little Edie were familiar names in American media and society life. Big Edie had some success as a singer. Little Edie tried to make it as an artist and model, but was best known as Jacqueline Kennedy's eccentric cousin. Now, it has all disappeared: The big family, the fortune, the camera lights and the cocktail glasses. All that is left is the two of them, 16 cats and a raccoon.
The acknowledged Swedish writer and playwright Sara Stridsberg, who received Nordic Council's Literature Prize in 2007, has written the play The Art of Falling about the two historical female characters. The play is based on sources including the cult documentary Grey Gardens from 1975, showing how the two women, despite their isolation and poverty, never let go of the joy in creating and recreating the idea of themselves.
When director Morten Borgersen gives this story new life, he wishes to comment on the moving and tragicomic in wanting to create one's own role. Is it escaping reality, a life-lie? Or is it a fundamental part of being a human being?
And besides: What is, really, a good life?"
