"The core of the conflict is a broken jug. But it is soon revealed that not only a jug is broken. A young girl has also been marked by powerful people's misdeeds. The judge turns out to be the guilty one.
In the small village Husum a case is tried. The same day an inspector from out of town is present to control the justice system in the area. This leads to the local judge, Adam, having to preside over a case where he is also the perpetrator. The judge who is in power of the young girl Eva's destiny has used his power as means to force her to sexual acts. During the trial, abuse of power and the long-fingered judge will gradually be exposed, whereas the jug, symbolising Eva's innocence, turns out to be impossible to repair.
German classic
Heinrich von Kleist's comedy from 1808 is one of the most performed plays in German theatre. Judge Adam represents power in the small society, and is a symbol of the corrupt within the system. With humour and a sharp edge, Kleist managed to emphasise old, ingrown, societal imbalance, making the play still relevant for audiences more than 200 years after the original release. The actions are well known. That power can lead to transgressions is, unfortunately, still a fact. The judge is punished, and the law is enforced. But the jug remains broken, as does Eva. The harm has been done and can't be undone."
