"Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? has, as all works of artistic value, its hidden and undefined depths. Everything indicates a realistic presentation of Edward Albee's drama, but with the underlying tradition of the ensemble, inspired by Antonin Artaud's theories and Jerzy Grotowski's technique, a combination of two theatrical realities is made possible.
In the play we meet a middle-aged couple, Martha and George, who have invited a young couple, Nick and Honey, to an afterparty. As the drunken night approaches morning, existential human pain comes to light, in form of a game of truth and lies. Prior to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Edward Albee had written six plays, but he didn't achieve the same success with these, nor with his later works, as with the story of Martha and George. Today, it is a classic.
The world premiere took place October 13 1962 at Billy Rose Theatre in New York. In 1976, as a kind of afterthought, critic Clive Barnes wrote: ' Perhaps the play was overpraised at the time - indeed it was - and Mr. Albee has written better plays since. But he has never quite equalled the verismatic savagery of this play.' And apropos of 1976: The play was also performed at The National Stage in Bergen that year, in a production directed by Stein Winge, and with our stage designer, John-Kristian Alsaker, in the position of stage designer also then."
