The Man with the Flower in His Mouth is a one-act play by Luigi Pirandello. It was translated to Norwegian for the occasion by director Jørn Riegels Vimpel.
Besides the well-known Six Characters in Search of an Author, it is not often that we see Pirandello's texts performed on the Norwegian stage. Director Jørn Riegels Vimpel has returned to Norway after seven years in Italy, and has brought with him a new translation and dramatisation of Pirandello's play The Man with the Flower in His Mouth from 1923.
This one-act is a compact and direct theatre performance in which one can clearly sense Pirandello's penetrating existential voice. This dramatisation of the piece balances on the border between reality and the beyond. The situation is clear - it is a triangle drama with one woman and two men - but it is far from realism. The dialogue can be called realistic, but what we see could never have taken place. Yet even so, this piece points towards a reality we all recognize.
The Man with the Flower in His Mouth was supported by Arts Council Norway, The Audio Visual Fund, The Italian Cultural Institute in Oslo and The Fund for Performing Artists.
