At the webpage of The National Theatre the following, among other things, is written about Cyrano:
"Cyrano de Bergerac is an invincible soldier, an uncompromising poet, playwright and society critic of impeccable moral- and an overdimensioned nose. His looks stop him from admitting his strong love for his cousin Roxane, who only sees the gorgeous-looking Christian beyond the end of her nose.
But Christian lacks the poetic abilities of Cyrano. On his behalf, Cyrano writes letters to Roxane, and her love to this genius of a man only grows stronger. Will Roxane eventually realise that looks isn't everything, and that Cyrano is the one she has loved all this time? Can Cyrano look beyond his moral nose in the air and admit his love before it is too late?
Cyrano de Bergerac from 1897 is a tragicomic, intense and emotionally laden story about unhappy love, courage and morals - freely inspired by a historical person by the same name. The story has been adapted into a movie several times, including once with the French actor Gérard Depardieu.
(...)
Theatre great Bang-Hansen has a predilection for Cyrano de Bergerac. He finds that it has a theatrical form, beauty, romance and tragedy we rarely see in the theatre and the movies in our time and day: The play springs out from a devotion to theatre and to poetry, and to great, pure love."
