Maria Magdalena* (Mary Magdalene)

At the webpage of Sogn og Fjordane Theatre the following, among other things, is written about Maria Magdalena - Jesu virke* (Mary Magdalene - the work of Jesus):

"The story of Jesus is told through the women surrounding him. In Jesu virke word goes to Mary, the one with the alias Magdalene, 'from whom seven demons had come out'. She can tell that Jesus saved her from madness and prostitution, and that she was close to him. She was his colleague, friend and a woman.

The night before Palm Sunday, and the night before Jesus and his entourage march into Jerusalem, Mary Magdalene tells the story of her first meeting with Jesus, and about his work from he was baptised by John to the week of Easter.

Through Mary we get closer to Jesus, but also closer to a historical fact that is often left in the shadows. Among the people who followed Jesus were several women, many of whom had been saved from demons and illness. They had their places in the light from the bonfires with the disciples, and they risked their lives through travelling around as missionaries.

Playwright Håvard Rem would like the spectators to see the story with contemporary eyes: 
'What we now understand as trauma and psychiatry, was considered bad spirits back then. To me, who grew up within a Pentecostal church, it doesn't seem that far away. During the 1960es and 70es, demon exorcism still went on, and for some reason, the women were often the ones subjected to it'."
