At the website of Teatret Vårt (Our Theatre) the following, among other things, is written about Skadeskutt* (Battle-scarred/Shot and damaged):

"Many who return from armed conflicts bring post-traumatic stress1 with them. Flight-fight response2 makes it possible to fight in a war. It means that the soldier only has two operational modes: To fight or withdraw. When the brain is unable to make up its mind, the body starts shivering. For a person with post-traumatic stress, a sound or a smell can awaken memories of situations where the stress levels were high, and trigger this shivering or other stress reactions.

Director Øystein Johansen and actors Lars Melsæter Rydjord and Hugo Mikal Skår will devise3 a story where two young men return from war, and are put on trial, accused of a war crime.

1Post-traumatic stress is a relatively prolonged, often chronic state, that may occur after severe or prolonged mental trauma. These could be accidents, war, disasters or abuse. The state is characterised by frequent flashbacks, where the scary experience is reimagined, both when the person is awake and asleep. Many try to avoid objects or situations that could remind them of the event. Many suffer irritability, insomnia, concentration problems and mood swings. Source: Norsk Helseinformatikk

2Flight-fight response is a reaction to sudden external threatening or scary events, for instance accidents, characterised by anxiety-laden withdrawal, possibly panic, or a reaction characterised by anger and aggression (fight). Combined with reactions of freeze, flight and fight make up phylogenetically determined and thus automated immediate responses to danger. Source:

3Devising, synonymous with creating. Devised theatre is a term for different techniques in creating theatre productions, since the 1960es used both in professional theatre contexts and in drama pedagogy. Devising is not a term used when staging already finished theatre texts, but each production has its framework of the materials that may be part of it, and how they should be developed into montages of body, voice, light, sound, media and objects. In principle, everything can be put on equal footing within devising, as parallel or contrapuntal tracks for the narrative or narratives, in improvised or in repeated processes.
