Notes from the Underground

At the website of Rogaland Theatre the following, among other things, is written about Notes from the Underground:

"Vegar Hoel is back at Rogaland Theatre. He and director Kjøstel Spigseth breathe new life into the monologue Notes from the Underground, based on the novel by Dostoyevsky from 1864. In it, they confront the brutality, the maliciousness and the outsider status of the main character.

Come with us into Kjellerteatret (literally: The Basement Theatre), where the underground dweller reflects upon his own miserable life and those who have crossed his path, in a mix of cruel remembrance and pitch-dark comedy. The basement dweller has cut himself off from his surroundings. He listens to us through a crack in the floor. In the depth of the basement, he finds a version of dignity, in which he sits, spinning his thoughts.

He is a lonely anti-hero, filled with inferiority complexes and hurt vanity. His own lack of success leads to an intense hatred for all fellow humans. He isn't always able to explain why he acts the way he does, but he feels a profound need to be an utter bastard."
