"Gregor is eight years old, doing well at school, and busy with sports, football, boy scouts and music. Everyone expects him to be good, but one day, enough is enough. Suddenly one morning, he wakes up and finds himself transformed into an insect!
It takes a bit of time, but eventually, he gets used to it. He actually thinks it is a bit cool to be an insect, even though everything is different, and much of what he was good at before, he can no longer do. But Gregor feels very different from everybody else, and even his Mom and Dad gradually distance themselves from him.
Franz Kafka was the one who in 1915 wrote the story The Metamorphosis, which our production is based on. Gregor lives with his parents and his teenaged sister Grete. In addition, we meet Gregor's teacher. The story is a lot about feeling different from others. Even before Gregor turns into an insect, he feels different from other children. This just grows stronger after the transformation. His parents, too, find that the transformation is difficult to relate to, and they stop expecting anything from Gregor.
The theatre production also is about the pressure of expectations. Nowadays, many children and youth feel this. They feel the demand to do well at school, be good at sports, be fun and cool. This is how Gregor feels, too, and he is very tired from it. But after Gregor turns into an insect, everything changes."
