"Aniara is based on the Nobel Prize winner Harry Martinson's epic poem by the same title, published in 1956. Humanity needs to leave Earth after an atomic disaster. One spacecraft after another steer through the universe to colonise Mars, but a meteor storm has Aniara lose its way. Towards eternity and the great nothing, the people onboard must accept the idea they can't return to civilisation."
At the website of The National Theatre the following, among other things, is written about Aniara:
"Aniara is based on the Nobel Prize winner Harry Martinson's epic poem by the same title, published in 1956. The poem has inspired both audio records and theatrical adaptions, and an opera has also been made from the work.
Finnish Tatu Hämäläinen has his education as a director from Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts, and his productions are often characterised by a downplayed, intimate approach. His stage rooms tend to be aesthetic experiences in which the audience is invited into a subtle, minimalist universe.
Aniara is a reflection over being on a journey, in the physical and the metaphysical sense of the term. How long is an eternity?"
