"The Great Dictator is the story of the time between two world wars. An intermezzo during which madness wrestled itself loose, freedom took a tumble and humanity got a few kicks in the behind. Adenoid Hynkel is Tomania's dictator, fond of power and of yelling. But he has a doppelgänger: A persecuted little Jewish barber suffering from memory loss. While the dictator is dreaming of ruling the world, and planning to invade the neighbouring country, Osterlich, the barber dreams of world peace.
