"The comedy The Cherry Orchard was written in 1904, the same year as the death of Anton Chekhov. With this play, he wanted to debunk the myth of the good old days: Just like the marvellous cherry orchard no longer generates an income, and is threatened by the axe, nobility no longer has a useful function in Russian society. Aristocracy is about to fall and the class divides to change, but pride is a hindrance for reason.
Theatre director Hanne Tømta, head of The National Theatre, had enormous success with her intimate, humorous production of Three Sisters in 2014, a production for which she also received The Hedda Award. One hundred years after the Russian revolution, the audience is again invited into a stylish, delicate Chekhovian world in the backstage venue, where a shadow of past ephemera rests.
As it is, you sit in another beautiful 'orchard' in decline; the remarkable building of The National Theatre is also marked by its lack of maintenance and past grandeur, made visible when the members of the audience take their seats in the provisional backstage venue."
