"Imagine standing in front of the mirror and staring at your own reflection. What happens in the empty space between your eyes and the eyes you see in the mirror? Who really is in front of you? And what happens if the eyes you meet in the mirror are those that see you?
Even echoes can become unrecognisable if they sound for long enough. This was also the case in Plato's allegory of the cave, in which a group of people experienced an event through shadows and echoes against a wall in a cave. What was most real - the actual event, that took place behind them, or the shadows, which they saw vividly in front of them? Who or what actually decides what something or someone is?
All identity is a construction, the Swedish director Anders Paulin says. He is finally back at The National Theatre, among other things to explore Plato's allegory of the cave and to examine the themes of subjectivity, echo and duality in Malersalen. Paulin is known for his political, philosophical and democratic attitude to theatre. His past production at The National Theatre, The Wild Duck, was nominated for The Hedda Award in the production of the year category in 2012."
