At the website of The National Theatre the following, among other things, is written about Cleansed:
"A university campus is transformed into an institution for society's outcasts. Here comes Grace to ask for her brother's clothes. He is dead from an overdose injected by the 'doctor' Tinker. Tinker willingly receives Grace, and she admits herself to the sanatorium. Here, she meets a world in which the conditions of love are tested, and in which norms of the group are used to punish or harm the outsiders.
Cleansed was written in 1998 by the British playwright Sarah Kane, a year before she committed suicide. Her plays are about love, sexual lust, suffering, pain and death. Where Kane meets the Lithuanian award-winning director Oskaras Koršunovas, a strong, poetic and powerful performance is created on the main stage of The National Theatre.
Koršunovas had enormous success with the disturbing production Our Class the autumn of 2015. The critics all over gave top scores and called the production 'the most important of the year' and 'a story for our age'. The event won't be lesser when Koršunovas now takes hold of the text that has woken physical reactions from spectators at The National Theatre in London.
When Sarah Kane was asked why she had written such a violent play, the playwright answered: 'I don't write violent plays; I'm just trying to be completely honest'. And Cleansed is a shiningly honest text daring to show human darkness, not to mention the darkness of existence, also when it describes the force and power of love."
