The Mother
The Mother (1940) was a planned theatre production by The National Theatre, based on a play by Karel Čapek. The run was cancelled due to the outbreak of war. The production was meant to be performed at the theatre's main stage.
Halfdan Christensen directed it.
Johanne Dybwad played the role of the mother.
The production did not have time to premiere, due to the invasion of Norway April 9, 1940. The dress rehearsal the previous day was performed for a smaller audience.
Čapek warned against Nazism and against Communism, and in The Mother, he described the totalitarian tendencies in his time and day. Plays like The Mother were prohibited for performance during the occupation.
