The Glass Menagerie

At the webpage of Rogaland Theatre the following, among other things, is written about The Glass Menagerie:

"The Glass Menagerie is one of the most performed plays in the world, and for good reasons. It was written in 1944 by Tennessee Williams, and the story is similar to Williams' own biography. The story unwraps Tom Wingfield's poetic flashback to dreams, life lies, straightjackets and broken illusions, and is a moving story about the pain of letting down those one loves the most.

The Glass Menagerie still is uncomfortably topical in its content. We meet the Wingfield family, where the mother Amanda dominates her son Tom and his lightly handicapped sister Laura. The former beauty Amanda lives in a dream, and she has never managed to adjust to her new reality after being left by her husband. In the same way, her daughter Laura has fled into a dream world of small glass figurines. Jim is the guest, the visitor from the reality outside, who brings movement to the family's different dreams. Tom is the only one who finally manages to escape the game of illusions, daydreams and life-lies. But at what cost?"
