"Disaster strikes, and in fear of what is outside, ten persons barricade beneath the same roof.
To pass the time, they begin to tell each other stories. But which are the stories one shares, when one sits isolated with others and the inhabitations fall? Are laughter and words all that is left when the world is hit by a crisis?
The Decameron was written by the Italian Giovanni Boccaccio in 1353, and it is regarded among the masterpieces of the world's literature. With its sensual, beautiful and naughty stories this work has inspired everyone from Shakespeare until the writers of today.
The Danish star director Elisa Kragerup has allowed herself to delight in Boccaccio's comical, moving and erotic depictions, and when ten of The National Theatre's actors get together onstage, a beautiful, funny and musical performance is unveiled.
Can they - shut in and together- create a better world, filled with compassion, playfulness and generosity, rather than fear, scepticism and egotism?"
