At the webpage of The National Stage the following, among other things, is written about Beautiful:
"In Beautiful, Fosse lets the family, He, She and The Daughter, go on vacation to his mother, who lives by the fiord. This time they have decided to stay for all of the summer. There they meet his old friend, who has not been able to leave the village, he still lives with his mother. The two of them played in a band together during their youth, and the friend was the guitar master, but we now sense that his artist's sensibilities are wearing on him. The play's He is a music teacher in town, but hasn't made much of himself, either. Now they are looking forward to reviving their old friendship and take the boat out on the fiord, or so they say.
The Daughter falls in love with a boy in the village, they court each other near the boathouse by the beach. Her mother and the friend also share dates at the same place, whereas He sits at home playing the guitar. It is summer and beautiful, but beneath the idyll is a sense of ending at many levels, and tensions between the people, not only of the beautiful kind. The mother tries to control things, but all can't be managed the way she wants to. Suddenly She doesn't want to be there any more, the adults leave, but the girl stays in 'the summer idyll'."
