"The People of Hellemyr has a central place in Norwegian literary history. And from its own experience DNS, too, knows that the narrative about the Myre family and the inheritance from Hellemyren is suitable for theatre. People came in drones for the marathon performance DNS staged in 1992. Now, however, there will be something brand new to it, as Julian Berntzen and Gunnar Staalesen create a three hour long musical from the familiar material. With them they bring one of Norway's most acknowledged musical theatre directors. Johan Osuldsen has, among other things, had great success with Mamma Mia!, Showgirls and We Will Rock You in Oslo, and with Company here at DNS.
The story, starting with Sjur Gabriel and Oline at Hellemyren, stretches several generations in time and carries with it timeless thoughts of inherited sin, family conflicts, faith and doubt, and despair as a consequence of poverty.
- Even though Skram's story is dramatic and bordering hopelessness, the life-confirming penetrates it, the director says, praising the pop and theatre composer Julian Berntzen and the crime fiction writer and playwright Gunnar Staalesen for their more than three years of work on the musical from Bergen."
