At the website of Nordland Theatre the following, among other things, is written about Cabaret:
"Fascism is knocking on the door, throwing dark shadows far into the infamous 'Kit Kat Club'. The cabaret artist Sally Bowles does everything to deny the dark forces outside of her world of life, laughter and lust. The American writer Cliff Bradshaw arrives in Berlin as Nazism is progressing. We follow the relationship between Sally and Clifford, and life surrounding The Kit Kat Klub in the unstable, scary time before Hitler takes power in Germany.
(...)
The English writer Christopher Isherwood (1904-1986) lived in Berlin from 1929 to 1933 - the year Adolf Hitler came to power. He experienced a city characterised by openness and tolerance, where nightlife blossomed and meeting places for gays were open secrets. At the same time, Germany was shaken by great political violence and disturbance. This contrast between joy in life and plethora o none (SIC, likely meant to be 'on one side', Sceneweb's comment) and Nazi progress nourished the novels Mr. Norris Changes Trains, Sally Bowles, Christopher and His Kind and Goodbye to Berlin, which later became part of the musical Cabaret."
