Edda
Edda (2017) was a theatre production by The Norwegian Theatre in collaboration with Aarhus Theatre, based on Jon Fosse’s reworking of The Poetic Edda. The production was performed on The Norwegian Theatre's main stage.
Robert Wilson directed it, with Ann-Christin Rommen as his co-director.
The complete ensemble received The Hedda Award 2017 in the special artistic achievement category. Robert Wilson won the award for best stage design and costume design for his stage design. In addition, Edda was nominated in the production of the year category.
Edda was performed in Aarhus in the autumn of 2017, on the occasion of Aarhus being the European Capital of Culture in 2017.

On the website of The Norwegian Theatre the following, among other things, is written about Edda:
"Robert Wilson is back at The Norwegian Theatre. The world-renowned American director has accepted the assignment of giving Norse mythology his characteristic signature.
Edda is a production based on Jon Fosse's adaption of the works written in Iceland during the 1200s. Contemporary composer Arvo Pärt's music will provide a backdrop of sound to this version of our oldest poetry work, guaranteed to become a visual, poetic and musical experience of a rare kind.
Robert Wilson is known for his stylised, concentrated artworks for the stage, in which lighting, stage image, movements and music are important components within a complete experience. He works almost sculpturally with the actors, putting them into images in which the details are as significant as the great picture. The last time he directed in Norway was when he staged Peer Gynt, a successful collaboration between The Norwegian Theatre and The National Stage, performed in Oslo and Bergen as well as New York. Wilson works in an untraditional manner, and we are excited to welcome the productive, demanding and distinct theatre artist back to The Norwegian Theatre."
The Hedda Jury gave the following reason for the special artistic achievement award to the ensemble:
"Certain assignments demand a more dedicated approach than others. Intense concentration. Detail-oriented precision. Finely tuned musicality. This year's award in the special artistic achievement category goes to an ensemble of actors who met and who mastered such an assignment with force and conviction. Some of them had experience with the same director and the same expression from former work. Some entered the work with openness and a will to learn. Together they succeeded in creating one of this year's most grandiose and most coherently stylistic performing arts experiences."
The Hedda Jury gave the following reason for the stage design award to Robert Wilson:
"This year's Hedda Award for best stage design goes to an artist known for creating productions with a distinct artistic character. The work for which he receives the award is no exception. The stage design recreates the tension between the gods and people's ability to create and destruct, and shows everything from the Gokstad Viking ship to volcanoes, the Tree of Life, Yggdrasil, and icebergs. It is sculptural and it is architectural. The light leads the frame of mind and the light leads the eye. This way, the story is shown as much as it is told."
