Ester's Book

In the performance "Ester's Book" by Odin Teatret we meet Iben Nagel Rasmussen, who has worked at Odin Teatret almost all of her adult life. In "Ester's Book" she is alone onstage in a very warm, personal and honest performance about her own mother. The story about Ester is the story about the conflict in an artist who is also a mother.

Ester sits in her room in the nursery home and can hardly remember anything. She knows that she is a writer and that she has written many books, but she can’t remember which and what they were about. Some episodes she recalls, such as the two American soldiers she and her husband Halvdan hid during the war, about the day Denmark was liberated May 4th 1945 and her first birth ten days later.

Ester is a woman who has her life splintered through a late divorce. In her lonely bitterness she is unable to gather her life into a meaningful whole. Ester is a female destiny – an image of an age.
