(Not) a Love Song

(Not) a Love Song by Alain Buffard (France) is a musical tragedy playing on clichés from the great Hollywood productions, deep love songs from Kurt Weill via Nina Simone to Lou Reed, and of course it ends with the lovers not getting one another.

Alain Buffard belongs to the modern, mature choreography circle in France, which still experiments with moving the boundaries for modern dance. Buffard has moved from a focus on gender and sexuality, to narration and voice. The body is nevertheless at the centre of any Buffard choreography, as he states that all dance, in its essence, is about the body.

In (Not) a Love Song from 2007, two beautiful women are cast in the main parts. Italian Claudia Triozzi and Portuguese Vera Mantero are divas. Clearly, they were once stars, but they were also faithful readers of celebrity magazines. They were unforgettable, but are now forgotten. For tonight, however, they are able to forget even their own bitterness and sing themselves – in beautiful, melodious voices – out of the gray, dreary lives that we have to endure. All the while, they are spurred on by their male fan base, represented by New York-based multi-disciplinary artist Miguel Guitierrez.

Press coverage

Marie-Christine Vernay, Libération, June 26, 2007:

"Marvelous."

Fabienne Arvers and Philippe Noisette, Les inrockuptibles, July 10, 2007:

"One has to acknowledge in Buffard a talent for directing that compares to none in France today. (Not) a Love Song, erudite and tragic, is like the fantasy juke box for our You Tube times."

Dance on Paper, Des 2007:

"(Not) a love song is a clever, stylish anti-love cocktail. If you get a chance, check it out."
