At the webpage of Nordland Theatre, the following is written about Jonas:
"The production Jonas is based on Jens Bjørneboe's novel from 1955. The main character in the novel is a first grader who is about to go under due to a narrowminded, anti-cultural school system. Through the story about the young boy who has trouble reading, Bjørneboe gives us ruthless criticism of not just the school system of the 1950es, but also of Norwegian society as a whole.
In the production Jonas, Nordland Theatre examines contemporary Norwegian society, using Bjørneboe's analytic perspective and the story of Jonas as a starting point. How is being different? What does it mean to be normal? How is a person who does not live up to demands and norms treated? Are 'the authorities' or 'society' or 'the school system' what seems inhuman, not understanding and suppressing, or do we just keep being subjected to stupid individuals without empathy?
Five young men tell the story of Jonas. Two Norwegian actors, one Polish actor and two Danish Parkour artists create a madcap physical performance with a lot of music. With surprising, anarchist humour, we uncover the conformist Norway's self-satisfaction and the inhumanity incorporated in our daily lives."
