"Audiences and critics alike cheered The National Theatre's production of Three Sisters, staged by the theatre's artistic director Hanne Tømta last year. Now, one year later, Tømta stages a production set to the rehearsal time of Three Sisters. Do you follow?
The opening is two weeks away, and the director Johanne struggles. Her actors object to her instruction or are on leave. The stage design is yet not finished. All of a sudden, the rehearsal is interrupted. Six unannounced persons enter. They are the father, the mother, the stepdaughter, the son, the boy and the little girl - but who are they really? They claim to be roles just waiting for a writer to provide them with a play.
The director thinks they are crazy and want them out. But when the roles start quarrelling with one another, and we see the first glimpses of the stories they carry with them, she starts listening. Gradually we understand that it is about an intense family drama. The director decides to stage their story.
Luigi Pirandello's play Six Characters in Search of an Author is one of the truly great, modern classics in theatre history. Ingmar Bergman staged it for The National Theatre in 1967, a production surrounded by myth as well as a great artistic triumph. Pirandello's play is like a game with the theatre - and the theatre's game with life. In Hanne Tømta's production a classic is adapted into the modern reality of theatre. We meet a number of the actors who took part in Three Sisters. And like Three Sisters, Six Characters in Search of an Author is at its deepest about identity. Who decide who you are? Do you own your own life, or does someone have to give it to you?"
