Galapagos
Galapagos by Abattoir Fermé (Belgium). The theatre production Galapagos tells the story of four characters who find themselves in the ruins of a strange hotel: a girl suffering from memory loss, a mad scientist, a dominating mother and her son, the hotel manager. The four characters are presented through monologues performed by two actors, both in double roles, in a production which was referred to as a sombre mix of adventure and Hollywood horror in the style of Cronenberg.
Abattoir Fermé is a theatre collective based in Mechelen in Belgium and was founded in 1999. Their influences range from Dadaism to horror movies leading to a personal and humorous, yet disturbing style of their own.

Galapagos by Abattoir Fermé can be described as existential horror theatre searching for the humanity behind the cruelty, paranoia and taboos. The production is about losing touch with reality and about the small gap between sense and madness. Galapagos in particular was inspired by a British TV series called Disinformation, which in form of documentary presented people who believed themselves to have been kidnapped by UFOs and then brainwashed by the CIA.
The piece moves across different layers: as a theatrical exploration of the counter-culture, as an Oedipus story and as a compassionate account of 21st century people no longer knowing who they are or what is true. Galapagos is a filmic tableau of obsessions, horror and fear.
In Galapagos by Abattoir Fermé the four characters lose themselves in a world behind the world: a land of conspiracies and apocalypses, sexual neuroses, identity crises and an overload of information. Who am I? Which reality is ‘real’? If the CIA is brainwashing people and cloning is no longer science fiction, what certainties have we got left?
"This hotel is weird. There are too many dark corridors and too few lamps that don’t work. Here and there it stinks. I think I’m the only guest staying here. Except for him of course. He’s on the first floor and I’m on the third. There’s a bible in every room. At nights, wandering through the hallways, I can hear people praying. This hotel is huge. And I’m so very small."
