Circus Klezmer

Circus Klezmer has sought inspiration in Chagall’s paintings, klezmer music and Jewish traditions in this sought-after performance, played totally without words. In a magnificent mix of irresistible rhythms, circus as light as a feather and absurd humour they take us into a distinctly poetical reality.

In a village in Eastern Europe which is neither near nor far, in a time which is neither present, past or future, a great feast is being prepared. The villagers are very excited and run here and there juggling, performing acrobatics and getting up to all sorts of mischief... because it's going to be a very special day. Framed in time, in one of those photographs which we sometimes see in our mind's eye, the Circus Klezmer. A wedding is being celebrated. The air is filled with klezmer music, the Jewish instrumental music originating in Eastern Europe. Between the musicians, the market stands and the busy villagers the local original stumble around spreading rumours, insults and invitations.

Everyone in the village is rehearsing an entertainment number of one's own, to make the day and the party unforgettable for bride and groom. Circus Klezmer is a magical synthesis of circus disciplines, a well-defined plot and characters, all to the accompaniment of live klezmer music. But, as we know, when grand occasions are to happen, misunderstandings and distractions have a tendency to heap up...

An old saying goes: A wedding without klezmer music is like a funeral without tears...
