Incarnat
INCARNAT by Lia Rodrigues (Brazil). - A naked body smeared a bloody red, jerks inside a see-through plastic sack. Another one seems to be holding its entrails in its hands: Lia Rodrigues confronts us physically with these brutal realities. These are realities with which everyone is familiar through the media but still, or for that very reason, immediately represses and banishes to the realm of virtual reality.

“This dance piece was born from a number of questions we asked ourselves: What does one feel faced with the pain of others ? What relations do we construct with others? How can we query these ideas and what do they tell us? What really counts today? What makes us react? What is more terrifying: 200,000 dead in an earthquake? 50,000 in a terrorist attack? 2 people kidnapped, their throats slit on live television? 5 deaths gone unnoticed in a conflict in some small country? 1 man on death row? The death of one’s parents or children? And how can we measure suffering as today’s numbers and stats roll across our screens? Numbers. Then more numbers. Statistics. Then more statistics. Is it still possible to reach out to the other, so different to one-self? You, made of the same stuff as I, is there a chance for understanding? How can we break down the barriers and create common ground. Work in groups… found communities… dance… this then is resistance perhaps?”
