In Bare Back Lying by Simone Aughterlony the performers try to initiate a somewhat romantic relationship to the audience from the edge of the stge. Aughterlony aims to create dynamic and tension between stage and seats, to lay a foundation for further playfulness with the deceitful qualities of the production.
Simone Aughterlony dives into these effects, into beginning lies and elements concealing and revealing at the same time, as the production goes on to express something true. She lets the performers be under surveillance using a video camera reading their minds, revealing lies and manipulating truth.
Simone Aughterlony hails from New Zealand. Since 1994 she has danced in several choreographies and dance movies by Lisa Densem and Carol Brown, among others. She became part of the Meg Stuart company Damaged Goods while working with the production Highway 101 and she replaced Meg Stuart in the contemporary classic Disfigure Study. As a choreographer and dancer she made the solo Public Property and the duet Performers On Trial prior to making Bare Back Lying, which is her first ensemble work.
Bare Back Lying by Simone Aughterlony was supported by Arts Council Norway and the Swiss Arts Council named Pro Helvetia. The production was presented in collaboration between Avant Garden and BIT Teatergarasjen, and in Trondheim the international film festival Kosmorama participated in the collaboration.
