"Oslo, 2014. In the Norwegian self-image the notion of freedom, equality and multicultural harmony still rules. But for some this no longer has a meaning. They don't believe in the ideals of the cultural elite. They want change, and they form a terror cell, led by the disillusioned and charismatic Stavrogin. They fear nothing. Not even death.
Demoner 2014 builds freely on a novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, in Norwegian known as De besatte (literally: The Possessed, which is also one of the titles it is known under in English. Other titles used for English translations are Demons and The Devils). Geir Gulliksen has written an intensely topical drama about love, politics and terrorism. And about what smoulders beneath the surface in Norway in 2014. The rebellion is about right-wing extreme activism against the tasteful radicalism of the cultural elite. Life-long fidelity as opposed to sexualised self-realisation. Moral escalation as opposed to liberalism's charming cynicism. And perhaps love is the driving force of them all?
When Runar Hodne stages Demoner 2014 at the main stage, it is to explore the tensions of Norway today. Hodne has made his mark as a director with a strong stage expression and artistic determination. He has collaborated with Geir Gulliksen earlier too, for instance in the production A Body, performed at Dramatikkens hus and The Torshov Theatre the spring of 2013.
The music is especially composed by the internationally acknowledged band Ulver. With Serge von Arx' stage design, Andreas Fuchs' lighting design and costumes signed by Nina von Arx, we are invited into a universe both beautiful and scary.
For Demoner 2014 is about us. And about the Norway we live in."
