New Flower

Letters from Ethiopia

New Flower. Letters from Ethiopia (2011) is an audio play for the stage, by Tone Avenstroup with music by Robert Lippok.

Avenstroup writes the following, among other things, about the production.

"New Flower', in Amharic, 'Addis Abeba', is the name of the Ethiopian capital. In 1929 Uncle Willy went there, searching for gold and other precious metals. Mother's mother was in Ethiopia in 1961, when mother's father worked for UN's economic commission for Africa. In 2009 I went to visit my uncle who worked for the Norwegian embassy in Addis Abeba. I wrote a log and made sound recordings. Mother's mother wrote letters, on transparent airmail paper.

Uncle Willy wrote books about his journeys: Urskogen kaller (literally: The Native Forest Calls), I villeste Afrika (literally: In the wildest Africa), Gjennom Etiopias jungle (literally: Through the jungle of Ethiopia). Uncle Willy went on adventures 'among wild people and animals'. Grandmother hoped that the Emperor Haile Selassie could make great changes. I questioned our western aid work.

Enthusiasm, optimism, self-examination. Three generations tell stories from Ethiopia."
