The play was written in 1993 on commission from The National Stage, and it was the second play that Fosse completed – Nokon kjem til å komme (Someone is Going to Come) var written the previous year.

Og aldri skal vi skiljast was performed together with Hennes bryllupsbrev by Botho Strauss, under the combined performance title Ingen annen.
