The Secret of No-Face

The Secret of No-Face was a production by Boreas Bulreador, produced in 1984. The production was premiered at Vikateatret in Oslo. The Secret of No-Face was the group's first production.

Boreas Bulreador wrote among other things about The Secret of No-Face:

"The production is based on the book The Secret of No-Face, in writing by Chief Everett Parker Oledoska - an epic legend which is a synthesis of the philosophy and teachings of a prophet from the Seneca natives in Northern America. Even though over version is a condensed version of the book, we have tried to keep the essence of the legend. But the story is processed and adapted for the theatre, to give it a language and an expression closer to our time and culture."

Press coverage

Writer and date unknown, Die Tageszeitung:
"If there was nothing else to see of this company's performance than the opening scene, the one with which the evening also ends with after almost two hours, it would be such a theatrical moment one could recall it again and again, happy and sad (because it had passed), the way one remembers lost love. [...] This whole performance is fascinating, authentically performed by the Italian Annalisa and the Norwegian Anne Mali. Light years beyond the inability and stupidity we too often see in the independent theatre of Berlin. This is a must-see."

Writer and date unknown, Arbeiderbladet (now: Dagsavisen) [Oslo]:
"A fully special, untypically Norwegian night in the theatre. [...] Exciting, thought-provoking and first of all humorous is our relatively new theatre and music company Boreas Bulreador's production The Secret of No-Face. [...] Here Anne Mali Sæther shows up as the most wondrous, incredibly comical characters. [...] It has become an evocative, spirited and beautiful performance. [...] not all independent companies can provide our cultural life with something new, but Boreas Burleador can."

Writer and date unknown, Bergen Arbeiderblad [Bergen]:
"Something of the most important having happened during the festival yet [...] because we finally see a Norwegian independent company having to such a degree found its independent expression. [...] It is mesmerising to see how the masks are given life through the body language, [...] It has become an incredibly poetic and warm performance. We understand why Boreas Bulreador has drawn such attention abroad too, and are looking forward to the next time the company visits Bergen."

Writer and date unknown, Dagbladet [Oslo]:
"With a quirky, luscious charisma Anne Mali Sæther plays the three famous people who know the most, but lack wisdom. [...] the old legend is told with moving simplicity and a lot of poetry - with shadow theatre, mask theatre, dance and mime."

Writer and date unknown, Aftenposten [Oslo]:
"Back to the roots the company Boreas Bulreador is searching, too, the only Norwegian company that is taking part in this year's jester festival. Its production The Secret of No-Face has interesting elements of a visual stage expression, in combination with music. The foundation is an Indian (Native American, Sceneweb's comment) legend, partly unrevealed before one's eyes, suggestively - the use of masks is central. The company shows that it has already gotten far in its poetic direction."
