All the three pieces of the Laterna magica trilogy was performed in the outdoors area of Hedmark Museum at Domkirkeodden in Hamar.

The three different productions were developed over a period of four years.

Laterna magica I had its premiere in September 1991, Laterna magica II in February 1993 and Laterna magica III during the Olympics in February 1994.

In the production the audience wandered from place to place. The lighting and the three-dimensional images were significant parts of the stage design. Every stop along the way included different elements, such as dance, juggling, music, acting. The events and tableaus were not necessarily connected.

Svein Gundersen writes the following about Laterna magica I:

"We wanted the included artistic expressions to live side by side, as components on equal footing. As such the ambitions were related to visual performance work, in the choice of visual expression in the acting sequences, and in the dramaturgy of the performance, a visual, associative dramaturgy.

We wanted to equalise the imagery and the textual. To realise our inner images. Use a language speaking directly to our dreams, and the myth inside of us. At the same time we wanted to play, and we wanted beauty - a complete work, in which the facets of being could meet us along the way, with their own mobile and not always controllable lives. And we wanted the audience to take part in the action. Not just come to moving from scene to scene in the physical sense, but as participants in the creation."

Laterna Magica is a Latin term, meaning Magic Lantern.
