With his photo series Not Stage(d), documenting the dancers and other performers backstage, photographer Yaniv Cohen seeks to reveal not necessarily the backside of the medal, but rather the human frailty of the unique environment of the dancers - behind the curtain.
The dancers in the images represent Norway's national ensemble for contemporary dance, Carte Blanche. Cohen, being a member of the company through years, has had the opportunity of gaining the confidence of the dancers he photographs over time. This provides a rare intimacy between the photographer and his subjects. Perhaps Cohen, as an insider, achieves the kind of intimacy and relaxation with the dancers a visiting photographer wouldn't have gained.
The exhibition was shown in the gallery Galleri Bouhlou in Bergen from October 18 to November 16 2008.
