Dr. Korczak and the Children by Erwin Sylvanus is based on a true story. Janusz Korczak (born Henryk Goldszmit) was a Polish-Jewish paediatrician and writer of books for children. When World War II broke out, he was the director of an orphanage in Warsaw. He had several occasions where he could have fled to safety, but each time he chose to stay with the children. Even when they were all sent to the concentration camp Treblinka in August 1942 to be gassed to death he did not want to leave them. Dr. Korczak died with his children.
