Quartet by Krement X has form of a duel in words and action. The duellists are two former lovers, Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont, both of them experienced, cynical seducers, born into the upper class.
Quartet is a partly playful and partly desperate game in which roles, gender and status are challenged through a duel in seductive eloquence, in tension between the opposites of sex and death. Underneath lie the opponents' increasingly pathetic attempts to flee one's own and the other's moral and physical decline, and the final result of the game is a given for both parties, no matter who wins.
