In Jazz Creature the audience meets different categories of puppets: Marionettes, handheld puppets and body puppets. Live music is performed by three of Norway’s leading jazz musicians.
Jazz and puppetry are art forms not so far apart as one would imagine, both having their roots in common culture, both building on improvisation. Bearing this in mind, veterans of Norwegian jazz and puppet theatre co-operated to give an audience of all age groups a special musical theatre experience. This meeting between two artistic expressions, where the musicians and the puppeteers both played with their medium, placed both genres in relief. By uniting or challenging a visual and a musical expression, new situations of experience were created for the audience.
Jazz Creature was split into independent episodes. Different puppets had different tempers and demanded different techniques from the puppeteer. Every puppet represented a small story and had its own musical backing. Some puppets strived to master their aims, such as Little Håkon, learning how to ride a bike. Others had more material motives, such as the troll searching for gold or Per Pølse (the name meaning Per the Sausage), having to choose between sausages and beer.
