Ella
Ella (2005) was a flamenco performance written, choreographed and produced by the flamenco dancer Asunción Demartos. Similar to the flamenco of its foundation and core, Ella is about emotion.
The range and intensity of the flamenco allow the painting of the introvert to the heated and explosive, via the playful and light. Ella was created in collaboration between Norwegian and Spanish artists.
Ella was described in the following way by Asunción Demartos:
"The auditorium is dark....
...except for a round, heavy, full moon lying over the stage. The shadow of a pregnant woman becomes visible within the light from the moon. We can hear the beating of a heart, and the cry from a child. A soft, female voice reaches us through the dark. It tells us about the birth and the innocence and the awaiting life.
...and the story continues. In the moving language of the flamenco. Alegrías, the dance of joy, is the first dance. There is also a Soleá, the dance of loneliness. Songs about pain and about love are sung. And the soft female voice follows us throughout the journey. Words, music and dance merge in a whole, a story told by women."
Ella toured Eastern Norway in April 2005; visiting the culture centre Sandefjord Kulturhus, the culture centre Larvik Kulturhus, Black Box in Fredrikstad, and the Jakob Culture Church in Oslo.
The Spanish word Ella means both she and her.
