Reaching for straws

eller hvorfor statssubsidier kveler kunsten* (or why state subsidies strangle art)

Reaching for straws with the Norwegian subtitle eller hvorfor statssubsidier kveler kunsten (literally: or why state subsidies strangle art) by Kim Atle Hansen had its world wide premiere in Dramatikkens hus the spring of 2011. The audience met the "fictional" "performing artist" "Kim Atle Hansen" who after performing his abstract physical performance Reaching for straws was interviewed onstage, trying to defend and justify his own work, while insecurity and artistic doubt shone through and led to him confronting the meaninglessness of his own art as well as in the art seen around him.

In Reaching for straws by Kim Atle Hansen the character called "Kim Atle Hansen" confronted the human-cultural ideology he was once convinced by, acknowledging that if art is to be justified with the taxpaying audience as well as the artist himself, it must be measurable and assessable. Thinking and feeling no longer suffice. As Kim Atle Hansen says: "Your heart is where your money is!"
