Flawed

Flawed (2011) is a production by Winter Guests/Alan Lucien Øyen, reflecting the little things that are flawed in all of us: I am a Muslim, I am old, I am gay, I am a mother, I am a careerist, and so on. Everything we do is picked on as a personality flaw.

The production Flawed by Winter Guests/Alan Lucien Øyen uses self-loathing as a foundation, illuminating the spiteful, critical dialogue so common in the way we relate to one another. With dance, drag, violent texts and video in their arsenal, Alan Øyen and the former Batsheva dancer Léo Lérus throw themselves onto the battlefield for the scary brutality and unmasking subtleties of racism, sexism and the other isms, as well as the rage that lies in all of us.

Flawed is an expressive, aggressive type of performance for which the keywords are criticism and quarrels. The use of text is determining and controlled by dialogue – a bitter and uncomfortable comment, a textbook example of the ugly face of misanthropy.

Flawed had its world wide premiere in Dansens Hus March 25 2011. Special expectations awaited it as it was the first production for five years in which Alan Øyen himself took part as a dancer.

Flawed by Winter Guests/Alan Lucien Øyen was supported by Arts Council Norway, City of Bergen, Norwegian Embassy Tel-Aviv and the Norwegian Ministry for Foreign Affairs/MFA (travel grant/performing arts).

"Rarely such an ugly text becomes moving. Self-loathing, Anti-Semitism, racism, gay bashing, harassment and grotesque stories are here given a shape and an expression that capture. Alan Lucien Øyen is a star on the sky of Norwegian performing arts."
