Beer Tourist

Beer Tourist by the Dutch company Wunderbaum is about football – possibly the only discourse the whole world can gather around to discuss at a relatively informed level. But football (or what the Americans call soccer) does not consist of only a ball, referees and 22 players. Football also is about the fans’ passion, sense of belonging and identity. In Beer Tourist by Wunderbaum the subject is the phenomena of football.

Beer Tourist by Wunderbaum is about the dominion of man, football, and everything related to it. Football is an arena to realise manliness. Through the football – and the influence of lots of beer - an opportunity to live out the longing for freedom and most of what is considered politically incorrect in the rest of society: Belonging to a club, male bonding, one-dimensional view on women, chauvinism and prejudice.

In Beer Tourist this freedom is maintained by two football tourists travelling with their team, Manchester United.

The way Wunderbaum sees it football releases emotions the world of art can only dream of. Eventually football also has been given more room as an issue for artists within different art genres.

In this context the legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly must be quoted: Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you, it’s much more serious than that.

Wunderbaum is a Dutch theatre collective who in 2009 visited venues including Avant Garden with Camp Jesus. Wunderbaum always works from social and political ideas and involvement.
