Towards the end of the 1990es Mark Wastell pioneered a new direction within improvisational music, breaking with most of the norms of the time: Reductionism.
Reductionism can be characterised by minimalism, subtle textures and a near whispering sound level. The musical genre has grown from metropolises such as Berlin, Tokyo and London. In London Wastell and trumpeter Matt Davis, who called themselves New London Silence, were among the most active musicians within this direction.
Mark Wastell curated this concert for Avant Garden, for which he was asked to put together an ensemble consisting of the most interesting free improvisation musicians in Europe.
Most of the musicians he chose have been central within Reductionism.
