Rakvere Teatre
Rakvere Theatre, opened in 1940, is a professional theatre in the small Northeastern town of Rakvere in Estonia. In Soviet times unconfirmed, but highly probable reports cited Rakvere as the smallest place with a theatre of its own in the whole empire. Being the smallest theatre in Estonia, its best actors and actresses have often been lured away to other theatres. As the town itself cannot provide enough spectators, the company is often touring.

The Rakvere Theatre has seen its periods of brilliance. One was in the late 1970s and early 1980s, under artistic director Raivo Trass. Afterwards the theatre has been led, in succession, by Madis Kalmet, Arvi Mägi, and Peeter Jalakas. The latter brought the biennial alternative theatre festival Baltoscandal with him, and it has continued to function in Rakvere even upon Jalakas' return to Tallinn. A new rise began in 1996, when a group of freshly graduated theatre students joined the troupe; Üllar Saaremäe became the artistic director and Indrek Saar the managing director of the company.
