Virginia's Letter

Virginia's Letteris a play written by Kjersti Haugen, Mads Bones, Odd L. Haugen and the ensemble of the eponymous theatre production, for Trøndelag Theatre in 2010, based on the letter Virginia O'Hanlon wrote the newspaper The New York Sun, and the reply Francis P. Church gave her in form of an editorial.

"Dear Editor,
I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, 'If you see it in The Sun, it's so. Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?
Virginia O'Hanlon."

Virginia O'Hanlon was eight years old, when she in 1897 wrote a letter to The New York Sun to find out if Santa Claus exists. Virginia's letter was short, but must still have touched something deep in the editors of the newspaper. The editorial that was printed the next day, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus", gave room to answer a much more complicated question, what it means to believe.
